During a calm night on vacation in the Yucatan Peninsula, an extraordinary spectacle unfolded above Akumal, Quintana Roo. Around 11:00 pm, while sitting by the ocean under a star-studded sky, I witnessed a remarkable formation—a soft yellowish-white V-shaped array of lights. This distinctive chevron comprised about five lights on each arm, moving together as one slow, graceful entity from right to left across the night canvas.
This mesmerizing formation swept across the sky until reaching what resembled the 10 o’clock position, where it executed a stunning, wide U-turn. Then, in a swift and captivating burst, the lights streaked vertically upward and vanished into the darkness. My sister and I, both thrilled by this enigmatic display, found the scene hauntingly quiet—so much so that the usually lively resort was deserted.
Adding to the mystery, my daughter, who had excused herself for a moment, returned puzzled after wondering why she had even gotten up, as she didn’t actually need the restroom. It was a night when the ordinary gave way to the extraordinary, leaving us with an unforgettable memory of chevron lights dancing silently in the sky above Akumal.
